Visit the charity's profileLeicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Club are the BT Super Series Champions, and exists to remove barriers and create opportunities for children and adults living with disabilities.
Whilst successful on the court, the cost of competing in the BT Super Series has increased and can be a major cost in the annual budget. The Leicester Tigers Foundation is working extremely hard to signpost the opportunity to new players. The funding we have is used to help supply a new player with appropriate kit, which also includes sourcing the correct style of rugby chair.
Up until now the opportunity to take part in Wheelchair Rugby has only been made accessible for adults. Now we have a grass roots programme, expanding this work to children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. One of our new aims is to create a youth team, which as well as competing, will support the growth of the sport in Leicestershire, and in turn will continuously offer schools the chance to further engage those students with disabilities. To carry this out to its full potential, we need to raise enough for specific youth chairs and access to a training facility. Assemblies are also used in primary schools to engage hundreds of students at a time to increase understanding and raise awareness of disability within sport, as well as our Wheelchair Rugby Club.
By using the Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby team as our finest example of what can be achieved when a group focuses on ability not disability, we can work with schools and other groups across the county to help raise awareness of disability within life and sport.
